Practicing, or searching for what to practice?

"I practice regularly, but I don't see any improvement."

This is something I hear quite often.

The assumption that if time is being spent with the guitar, the playing should improve, is reasonable.

Sometimes the difficulty is not a lack of practice, but what happens during practice time.

The guitar may be in hand, but the mind is searching for something to attempt. it could be a new scale, lick or an exercise. There is always something else to learn.

The practice session feels productive because there is constant movement. The mind stays engaged and there is no shortage of new material.

Yet, over time the playing remains unchanged.

Most of the collected ideas are not usable. Some ideas are familiar but there is no confidence to use them in actual playing.

It is like reading recipes from a book. One begins to recognize ingredients and can imagine how the dish might come together, yet the act of cooking never quite begins.

The search continues, but the playing remains where it is.
