Playing What Feels Easy

We all have our favourite things to play on the guitar.

A chord progression, a strumming pattern, a scale shape, or a lick. The fingers know exactly where to go and it feels good to play something fluently.

There is nothing wrong with that.

But over time, the familiar musical ideas begin to repeat themselves in the playing.

Everything works, but nothing changes.

It is like meeting the same group of friends and telling the same story every time. The conversation continues, but it never really goes anywhere new.

After a while, the playing sounds predictable.

Familiarity replaces exploration.
